Import

Drop audio files on the timeline or use Import. Each file becomes a clip; files dropped on a track land there at the drop point. WAV, MP3, OGG/Opus, FLAC and M4A/AAC work in Chrome and Edge (Safari and Firefox decode most of them).

Editing

Click a clip's header strip to select the clip, drag it to move (also to another track). Drag its edges to trim, the small white squares to set fades. Ctrl+Drag copies. Left-drag anywhere on the tracks (also over clips) selects a time range across tracks. Right-drag selects a range on that one track only. Play always plays the whole mix from the playhead; ▶ Sel (Shift+Space) plays just the selected range on its tracks and returns to its start. Drag the selection's start or end line to resize it. A plain right-click on a clip opens its menu. Delete removes the selected range, Shift+Delete closes the gap. Double-click a clip to select its range. Hold Alt while dragging to turn snapping off. Clips that overlap on one track crossfade automatically (Project tab to turn off).

Track tools

▦ on an audio track switches it to a spectrogram (frequencies over time: low at the bottom, high at the top) to find hum, hiss and clicks; ∿ switches back. ⤓ bounces a track to audio: its instrument, effects, volume, pan and automation are rendered into a new audio track below and the original is muted.

Mixing

Each track has volume, pan, mute, solo and an effect rack (FX). The Master rack processes the whole mix. Double-click a slider to reset it. Everything you hear is what the export renders.

Automation

Press A on a track header to show its volume lane, again for pan. Click the line to add a point, drag points, double-click a point to delete it. Volume automation works on top of the fader (the line at 0 dB changes nothing); pan automation replaces the pan slider while it has points.

Tempo

Set BPM and choose a musical Snap (Bar, Beat…) to edit on a bar grid; the ruler then counts bars. The metronome (♩) clicks on the beat while playing or recording and is never exported.

Process

Clip tab → Process: normalize, amplify, permanent fades, reverse, invert, silence, click & crackle removal (raise Sensitivity for more crackle, Max click length for longer pops), noise reduction (select a noise-only part and press Learn for the best result), remove vocals (karaoke, stereo only: cancels what sits in the centre and keeps the bass), DC removal, mono, swap channels, speed, tempo (keeps pitch) and pitch shift (keeps length). With a range selected, only that part changes; with nothing selected, the whole selected track is processed. Every step can be undone.

Audio → MIDI

Select one audio clip and use Clip tab → Audio → MIDI: the notes are detected in your browser (Spotify's Basic Pitch model, nothing is uploaded) and written to a new MIDI track. Choose Melody for a voice or solo line, Chords for a piano or guitar part. It works best on one instrument at a time.

MIDI

+ MIDI adds an instrument track (piano, e-piano, organ, guitar, bass, strings, brass, French horn, choir, pad, synth, drums, taiko). Double-click its lane to create a clip, double-click a clip to open the piano roll: click to add notes, drag to move, drag the right edge to resize, right-click or double-click deletes, Ctrl+Drag copies, the lower strip sets velocity. Turn on ⌨ Keys to play the selected MIDI track from your computer keyboard, or MIDI In for a real keyboard; arm the track and press R to record notes. Import and export .mid files. Instrument samples come from the VirtuaKey library (Salamander Grand Piano and Drumkit, Greg Sullivan E-Pianos, VSCO 2 CE, University of Iowa via tonejs-instruments) - credits and licenses; bass, brass and French horn come from tonejs-instruments - credits. Organ, choir, pad and synth are synthesized.

Mixer

Mixer (X) shows a channel strip for every track, bus and the master, with meters.

Recording

Arm a track (●) or select it, press R. Playback runs while you record so you can overdub. Use headphones.

Saving

Save writes a .wsproj file with all audio inside; Open loads it on any computer. Export renders WAV, MP3, FLAC or Opus (the whole mix or one file per track), or the MIDI tracks as a .mid file. Your work is also auto-saved in this browser every 30 seconds; after a crash or a closed tab, "Restore last session" appears at the bottom. ☁ Online saves the project to your Study'N Fun account (log in on the home page first; up to 200 MB per project, 500 MB in total) so you can open it on any computer.
